POLICY UPDATE: Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Drugs

3 Oct 2023

The Registrar has announced that recent amendments have been made to the policy for Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Drugs (Drug Policy)

1. Oxytocics and Prostaglandins
It was determined by the Council that an amendment to the policy Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Drugs was needed to ensure clarity and understanding regarding the use of Oxytocin and Prostaglandin by Registered Midwives.

The following amendments, reflected in footnotes within the policy were approved by the Council.

Oxytocics – Induction/augmentation of labour
Midwives can prescribe, order and administer Oxytocin for the purpose of induction or augmentation of labour  in a hospital setting, following hospital policies and procedures.

Prostaglandins – Induction of labour
Midwives can prescribe, order and administer Prostaglandin for the purpose of induction of labour in a hospital setting, following hospital policies and procedures.

2. Tranexamic Acid (TXA)
The Council recognizes that Tranexamic Acid (TXA) is included under the category Antihemorrhagic in the policy Prescribing, Ordering and Administering Drugs. No edits to the policy were required for this recognition to be true. Therefore, Midwives are able to prescribe, order and administer TXA.

These decisions and amendments were approved by the MRCNS Council on September 20, 2023 at their Quarterly Council Meeting.
