Becoming a Registered Midwife
Related Documents
In order to practice midwifery in Nova Scotia a midwife must be registered with the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia.
There are three routes to registration:
1. Graduation from a Canadian university midwifery education program;
2. Registration in another regulated Canadian jurisdiction; or
3. For internationally educated midwives, completion of a competence assessment and bridging program.
One of the routes for registration in Nova Scotia is through the completion of a baccalaureate level degree in midwifery. A graduate is also required to complete the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE) offered through the Canadian Midwifery Regulators’ Council.

For a list of other competency programs which have been approved by the Council click here Policy on Competency Assessments and Bridging Programs.
According to Chapter 7 of the Agreement on Internal Trade, a general registrant midwife in any Canadian province or territory can be registered with the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia. The applicant must give consent for the regulatory body in the Canadian jurisdiction in which she is currently or has been previously registered to provide the Council with Proof of her Professional Conduct.
If you have been registered in another Canadian jurisdiction within the past five years and are seeking registration in Nova Scotia please contact the Registrar.
